Raising awareness

Poole Hospital’s head & neck cancer team are always looking for opportunities to highlight the risk factors connected to mouth cancer, raising awareness of its symptoms and the importance of early diagnosis as well as its links to the Human Papillomava Virus (HPV).

ABOUT HANDS

HANDS is a patient led support group for people and their carers/families who have experienced head and neck cancer.  We are fully supported by the clinical nurse specialists from Poole Hospital NHS Foundation Trust.

We welcome patients and their families to our meetings. It is an opportunity to share experiences, information and advice.

The group fully respects individual confidentiality. We communicate as much or as little as we want to, all in an informal situation.

The aim was to promote physical, psychological, social, and spiritual health and wellbeing and include strategies to promote self care for living with and beyond cancer.

The Primary Care Mental Health Service can help support people with mental health issues such as anxiety, depression, and post traumatic stress disorder, through counselling.

The aim of this 4 week course is to encourage and support patients with Head and Neck cancer to manage changes following treatment, as well as to help you become actively involved in looking after your health and wellbeing.

BUDDY SCHEME

Buddy Scheme - patient-to-patient support

If you would like to offer buddying or befriending to someone who has been diagnosed with head and neck cancer, please contact the head and neck clinical nurse specialists at Poole Hospital. There may be opportunities to undertake a short training course to provide an overview of what is involved in the role of buddy/befriender and enable you to manage the emotional demands of this.
